IN THEORY

So here we are, 10 months into my learn to drive quest  and while I think there’s still a little more for me to learn behind the wheel , I think I’m now competent enough  to sit my theory test.
After months of studying, pouring over the Highway Code not to mention online tests and tutorial DVDs, the day finally dawns this week when I’ll have to prove I do actually know what I’m talking about.
With the aid of my theory test book I’ve become aware that a good dose of common sense rules when confronted with such multiple choice questions as “what should you do if you accidently knock someone off their motorcycle?”, sample answer – offer them a cigarette, and I think I should be able to pass that part of the test with ease
However as I tumbled over my other half’s  briefcase whilst on my way out the door to go on my most recent driving lesson,  think maybe my hazard perception might need a little work.

I failed by one point on hazard perception by the way ....sob !

PAVERANT

Pavements, at one time a route for pedestrians so that they felt safe from the threat of the automated vehicle.

A place where young and old could stroll freely and not be in any danger just as long as they didn’t stray too close to the edge of the kerb.

But no longer is that the case for due to worries for their poor cars tough outer shell apparently now the safest place for some motors to be is right there with us on the footpath .

No matter kids on their way to school and parents with buggies are forced to re-route onto the busy road as there’s not enough room for them to squeeze by on the safe side of your pride and joy because all that’s really important is not having to claim on your insurance for troublesome car maintenance isn’t it ?

After all a new wing mirror is so much more expensive than a human life?

Unexpected shopper in the packing area

It’s supposed to make our lives easier so the boffins at supermarket HQ would have us believe   ,  promoted as a time saving device  that means we’ll be home sipping  a lovely hot beverage before those slowcoaches stood in the queues have even had a chance to get out their bags for life .
But then of course we try to use the self service checkout and all that positive spiel we’ve heard just goes straight out the window.
There it stands gloating at you in all its technical glory promising you such efficiency then the minute it has you hoodwinked into believing the hype, proceeds to hold you up in any way it can.
It doesn’t care whether you’re in a hurry or have all the time in the world, its only goal is to see just how many times and for how many stupid reasons it can stop you going about your daily business within one shopping trip.
From unexpected items in the packing area which clearly it should have expected as you’ve just scanned and put them there to promotions it doesn’t really want to be dealing with because it’s  an mighty computerised evil genius, it’ll make you stand there under the embarrassing flashing red beacon of gloom till a poor human minion has a moment to come and help you sort out your problem with its special device and secret code to release the information needed.
And naturally there will only be one of them to deal with the customers swearing under their breath and preparing to put their fist through the glass screen of the scanner because the last thing self checkout wants to do is let anyone make a quick getaway.
Here stands a woman with only 3 items in her basket “that shouldn’t take long” she foolishly thinks without realising checkout has other ideas for her. Not only will it call the assistant over  once within this transaction to check understandably that she’s old enough to be purchasing superglue but also a further 2 times to check the item it’s asking her to “ please put back into the bag “ is definitely there when its clearly in the bag for all to see .
And god help you should your handbag or coat slightly graze the sensitive scanning area ,sending into a complete tantrum and  refusing to do anything for another few precious minutes.
After a bit of soothing from the minion though it will eventually calm down again and now it’s time for you to make your payment .If it’s with a card that’s fine and it’ll all be over and done with quickly and easily once you’ve partaken the barrage of questions for cash back and entered your pin number .
However if you’ve decided to pay with that outdated and old fashioned currency of actual money don’t expect to be getting away quite so swiftly.
Unless your notes are straight out the cash point new and pristine it’s not going to be having any of it until you’ve inserted it at least 5 times whereby once it’s had its fun with you like a cat with a mouse it’ll finally stop rejecting it and gobble it up .
And as for coins it will be just as picky with them even going so far as to develop an allergy to certain denominations and refuse to take them despite the fact they’ll quite happily spit them out in your change.
Eventually though you’ll finally conclude your transaction and you glance round at those who still choose to use the old slow people powered tills to gloat about how much time you’ve saved scanning your own shopping. But you’re too late they’re long gone and already at home savouring that hot beverage after receiving service with a smile instead of a technological nervous breakdown.

Why we shouldnt dismiss young mums

Young mums, they don’t get the best press do they?

We gasp at yet another headline about girls barely out of childhood giving birth then make the same old judgements that the child won’t have much of a life because of the irresponsibility of their actions.

We have them down as Vicky pollard types having a quick bunk up with someone behind the bike sheds to get a council flat and benefits to buy plasma screen t.vs  and ciggies and that she’ll keep churning them out so she doesn’t ever have to get up off the sofa to look for work.

And while yes maybe there is a tiny minority for whom that is the agenda, i think maybe it’s time we stopped relegating all young mums into this stereotype.

Take one of my best friends, back in our youth the only time we’d encountered teen pregnancy was Michelle on Eastenders .While we were supposed to be revising for our upcoming G.C.S.E’s , I knew Heidi had been going through a bit of a rebellious and slightly troubled phase ,hanging out at parties with other friends and boys but when rumours started to circulate that she was pregnant I just put it down to the bitchy gossip of our peers.

That was until I spotted her in Mark One in Chatham months later and there nestled in the comfort of his pram was her son Nathan.

And as she started hanging out with myself and best friend Tracy again the former “wild child” of the previous year  seemed a much more calmer, mature and responsible girl than she did before to me.

She wasn’t without her critics though, I knew she had had people tutt at her and make assumptions about her ability to bring up her child properly just because of her age. If her son became weepy and stressful while she was out anywhere it was down to her being young and unable to cope rather than teething,  hunger or a wet nappy.

And despite all the bother her first pregnancy bestowed on her, she happily gave birth to a 2nd son Dom a couple of years later at the age of 19.

Around this time we lost touch for a little while as she slipped contentedly back into the role of new mum again having found some friends who understood her parenting world a bit more than those of us for whom the Britpop era loomed on the horizon.

It wasn’t until about 8 years later that our paths crossed again quite by chance as i pushed my newborn twins around Safeways in Walderslade in their buggy  and recognised the familiar face of the person walking towards me.

We took a stroll back to my house where caught up with everything that had been going on in our lives  over a cup of tea.

She and her partner had split up a few years previously but it was for the best she said as life was far less stressful now she was a single mum, her son had been diagnosed with aspergers syndrome which had finally proved to all those who’d speculated that his stressed out behaviour was down to her parenting ability wrong and that she was always fighting to make sure he got the help he needed in school.

She’d had a few different jobs including bar work and as a classroom assistant to make sure her kids never went without.

The quiet school girl I’d met way back in 86 was long gone and now she was this brave lioness who took no rubbish from anyone anymore and to be honest as a new mum at the age of 28 and struggling a bit with how it had changed my life i was in awe of her and still am.

Even after a few hardships and tragedies that had befallen her over the years that others might cite as a reason why they’ve gone off the rails, she still has a smile for everyone and is always there for you if you need her whether it be as a shoulder to cry on or someone with whom to vent some spleen.

She looks out for everyone, probably a bit more than she does for herself at times and is a person who gives great down to earth advice when needed.

And she does so much for people she hasn’t even met as well , taking on such things as the 3 peaks challenge , walking 26 miles round London in just her bra and even abseiling down the side of a building all in the sake of charity .

Heidi, the teenager who some people didn’t expect to amount to much holds down a responsible supervisor job and has brought 2 sons up to have the same hard working attitude so it just goes to show the learning curve that is being a good parent doesn’t care if you’re young or old it’s just interested in the work you’re prepared to put in to get the things you want to achieve.

Look beyond the age of the person and believe in the actions that you see.

That young mother you’re passing judgement on might just be a mum in a million.
